In 2007, after years of working in retail, Jenn Woo became a stay-at-home mom and, out of sheer convenience and love for fashion, found herself shopping online. At the time, there weren’t many Canadian based online retailers. Jenn found herself frustrated with hefty custom duties that are notorious when online shopping so she started Luxe Label as a home based e-commerce site.
For the past 7 years, Luxe Label has offered Winnipeg women timeless, modern, effortless pieces that are almost too beautiful to tuck away in a closet. With brands like Vince, 7 For All Mankind, and Sam. New York, it’s no surprise that Luxe Label has become a staple both online and in-store.
I sat down with Jenn to see what’s trending and get her opinion on what staples Winnipeg women need this winter season.
Black Blouse (BB) It must be great to see so many different personal styles everyday. What’s your take on Winnipeg’s fashion culture?
Jenn Woo (JW) Winnipeg’s fashion culture has really evolved from when our storefront location opened. They’ve become much more savvy and fashion conscience due to social media and the explosion of online websites today. Winnipeggers get a lot of flack because of how cold our winters are compared to other Canadian cities. I think it’s great- we can justify investing in cozy sweaters and beautiful statement coats because they’ve become functional day-to-day pieces.
(BB) What’s an item of clothing or accessory you just can’t live without?
(JW) I can’t live without would have to be a great pair of high heel shoes. People who know me know I don’t wear flats- ever.
(BB) How do you find balance between staying warm while looking cute in Winnipeg?
(JW) Investing in the best you can afford and well-tailored pieces will keep you looking your best during the colder months. Always remember to keep in mind cost-per-wear and the functionality of the pieces when it comes to where to spend your hard earned money. Experiment with layering different fabrics to minimize bulk and keep the lines clean and simple.
(BB) What are staple pieces every Winnipegger should have in their closet?
(JW) Staple pieces every Winnipegger should have in their closet are:
- A great pair of fitted jeans
- A beautiful statement coat
- An everyday classic handbag
- A comfortable pair of heeled booties
- A well-tailored black blazer
